5 Key Guidelines for Video Descriptions
Chapter 3 – Tip #2 of 15 Traffic Building Video Tips and Tricks
With YouTube being the second largest search engine in the world . . . and with its growth reaching new records every other day, or so it seems, it is a must for your business. Take advantage of all that traffic!
When writing your Video description keep it personal, warm and friendly. Speak to one individual. Rather than saying, “some of you out there . . . “ say, “you may be having this problem . . . “. This is up to you but be aware of the tone you are setting. Most of us like to engage one on one rather than as one in an unknown group.
The 5 Important Guidelines
To write a killer description of your video there are 5 key tips or guidelines we need to include. They are:
1. Keep it to the point and at least 200 words.
2. Your first two sentences must be written skillfully.
3. Include a call to action.
4. Add more related links.
5. Add your contact information
1. Keep it to the Point and at Least 200 – 300 words.
Remember this is a “description”. The “description of your video is to be just that. What is your video about? Get at that quickly and Stay on Point.
One of the first things to do in preparing to create any video, blog or article is to make a couple of lists.
1. The first list are the content ideas you want to cover around your keyword. What is the problem your audience needs solved? Show “you understand”. Talk about their “pain”. Then . . . solve their problem.
2. This second list is two-fold. Focus on one keyword. Short Videos tend to get more views than long ones. However, if you are doing longer Videos you may focus on more than one keyword. Even with a short Video you can use a keyword phrase versus one word.
Part two of this second list includes all of the relevant words, or tags related to your keyword or phrase. When you talk on one Keyword there are a bunch more related words. Use those as your tags. More on “tags” coming up next in tip #3
2. Your first Two Sentences must be written skillfully.
In this “description” you want to include 2 items within the first 2 sentences. They are:
1. Your main Keyword or Keyword phrase.
2. Your URL where you want people to go. Do this in a hyperlink. Herein lies some controversy. See below.
When using your keyword(s), or your long-tail keyword phrase, be sure to make it appear natural. Do not force it to fit. Make it flow as a natural part of the content.
Become an excellent story teller. Your Title begins to tell your story. Your keyword is a story in and of itself. But those first two sentences must be crafted to tell the story of your Video in a way that compels your visitor to open AND to watch your Video.
These are the first, and could be the only, words seen in your description. These sentences are critical to your video being seen and therefore to be favorably ranked.
Why 2 sentences? Short sentences are more easily understood. Only the first 157 characters will be seen initially. And with some search engines it may be only the first 100 characters so make them count. Therefore make them short, clear and with your best description of your video.
These two sentences, 100 characters, need to include your keyword and your Call To Action (CTA) via a hyperlinked work connected to your URL or Blog . . . wherever it is that you want people to go.
Controversy? A CTA here may be too early. It may not be as effective as more intrigue and/or more reasoning to open and watch your Video. To make YouTube happy we want as much watch time as possible before moving on.
I would opt-in on holding the CTA to later time.
The above will not only drive more traffic but this will drive a better ranking of the video as well.
3. Include a Call To Action.
Well, we already spoke of this a bit. This is a good area to spend some testing time. See how well the early CTA proves out. But always end your description with a call to action.
You always want to engage your viewers. You want them to interact with you and with your content. This is how you want to set up your Facebook business page as well. Interaction or engagement is another important key to traffic growth.
4. Add More Related Links
These can add to your CTA opportunities.
All and any Links are fair game as long as they add to visitor satisfaction. Add links to other related videos, blogs and articles. Add them at the end of your video description.
You might even want to add them to the end of your video and let the video run another 5 to 10 seconds for people to see. At least do this with your CTA URL of your website or Blog or FaceBook page.

5. Add Your Contact Information
How do you want viewers to contact you?
Add that info to the end of your video along with your other “Related Resources”. I like to place my contact info before I list the Related Videos and Articles.
